In the spring
of each year HBC produces a choreographed adaptation of a cherished
fairy tale. Most recently these have included Wizard of Oz in
2001, The Little Mermaid in 2002, Beauty and the Beast in 2003,
Cinderella in 2004, and Sleeping Beauty in 2005. Additionally,
since 1999 HBC has performed the classic favorite The Nutcracker,
an annual winter holiday tradition that is often a young audience
member’s first experience at the ballet. A portion of the
proceeds from each of HBC’s productions benefit the Family
Tree, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening families
and heightening the awareness of child abuse and neglect in the
state of Maryland. Our treasured relationship with the Family
Tree began in 1999 and continues today, giving our dancers great
purpose.

| HBC
has developed a unique, audience interactive performance style that
is geared toward children, but has also enchanted adults in the
Harford County community. Each of the aforementioned productions
includes a segment designed to allow children in the audience to
feel that they are playing an essential role in the show. HBC feels
that providing a cultural and educational experience such as this
is not only fun, but also inspiring to out younger audience members.
After each show, children are afforded the chance to meet and engage
the still-costumed cast members to request autographs and pose with
them for photographs. Through our creative, interactive approach
of audience participation, and the occasion to meet the dancers
“up-close and personal”, we provide a wonderful chance
to experience the world of theater and dance to children who may
not otherwise have this opportunity.

In conjunction
with its annual Nutcracker production in December, HBC has also
developed a Nutcracker Outreach Program where children, ages 2 to
5, from area child care centers in Harford County are invited to
the Fallston Child Care Center for a very special experience. The
children are entertained with an excerpt from The Nutcracker as
an abridged version of the story is narrated. Afterwards, they are
led to a decorated Tea Party area where they are served sandwiches,
cookies, and juice by the dancers still in their costumes while
the Nutcracker himself interacts with the children allowing for
greetings and photo opportunities.
